(K)ubuntu 12.10 AC3 Pulseaudio

I use the internal digital SPDIF output from my notebook, but it only had stereo output. After some googling the solution was to add a file called /etc/asound.conf and fill it with this content:

pcm.a52 {
    @args [CARD]
    @args.CARD {
        type string
    type rate
        slave {
        pcm {
            type a52
            card $CARD
        rate 48000 #required somehow, otherwise nothing happens in PulseAudio
pcm.pulse {
    type pulse
ctl.pulse {
    type pulse
pcm.!default {
    type pulse
ctl.!default {
    type pulse

Additionally you need to install this package under Ubuntu libasound2-plugins-extra it brings support for surround sound over spdif.

Afterwards just restart or as user type:

pulseaudio --kill

Directly afterwords i could select “Digtial Surround 5.1(IEC958/AC3)” as audio output.
On Kubuntu under System Settings -> Multimedia -> Phonon -> Setup of Audio-Hardware

To activate the subwoofer i needed to add this to the file /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

enable-lfe-remixing = yes
default-sample-channels = 6

In the same file i needed to add

default-sample-rate = 48000

in order to playback 48000Hz media files.
